Open Access for books and chapters is an increasingly important consideration for authors, this event will discuss how some UK universities have launched pressess and publishing projects to explore the possibilities of opening the book publishing process.

This is an external event hosted by Academic Libraries North.

The programme includes the following presentations: 

• Steve Carlton and Olivia Rye will talk about the University of Manchester’s Open Access Monographs Project and their experiences of running the OA Monograph Competition, with reflections upon the ratio of entries from researchers publishing with smaller publishers versus the big prestigious monograph publishers, and whether libraries can influence this. 

• Dawn Cockcroft and Alice Rhodes from Huddersfield University Press will present an overview of HUP’s history and a holistic view of its current operation/activities, including how it supports the institution, challenges faced and how they seek to overcome them despite budgetary, time and staffing constraints. The presentation will also feature a spotlight on the development and success of ‘Fields: Journal of Huddersfield Student Research’. 

• Jan Herbst (Reader in Music Production at University of Huddersfield) has published 5 monographs including one as OA with Routledge and one OA with Huddersfield University Press. He will give a short talk about their experiences of OA monograph publishing.  

Presentations will be followed by group breakouts for attendees to discuss and consider the themes of the session with members of the community. Please come prepared to talk and share with others within this section of the event. 

This event will be held on MS Teams. The Teams invite will be sent to all registered attendees in due course.    

This event is aimed at anyone working in the following areas or roles: Library Research Support, Open Access, University Presses and other smaller publishers, academic researchers and authors, including ECRS and PGRs.
