Understanding research impact through bibliometrics (Online) Online

This session is primarily aimed at 1st year PGRs but is open to all researchers.

Session details

This taught session introduces key platforms, tools and metrics used to assess research impact. Discover what citations, journal impact factors and other bibliometric indicators reveal about how research is used and shared. The session includes practical guidance on navigating platforms like Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Ideal for researchers who want to make informed publishing decisions, and better understand how work, including their own, is received within academia and beyond.

By the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • Apply responsible practices when using research metrics.
  • Effectively interpret and utilise bibliometric indicators.
  • Efficiently find and compare relevant metrics across Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar.
  • Evaluate the strengths and inherent limitations of different metrics.

Session logistics

The session includes 1 hour of teaching followed by 30 minutes for questions and practical support. It is open to all researchers and will be delivered online via Teams or on-campus (please check when booking). For any questions, please contact the Library.
